Do you know
what Burger King and I (Pat) have in common?

both born in 1954 in Miami, Florida. Here's a 1960s picture of an old BK on SW 8th St. and 64th Ave. Miami
The Girth Birth of Fast Food
We'll talk about fast food and nutrition one day, but
for now, let's just look at the lighter side. In the '50s fast food seemed like a great idea, afterall, who could
foresee it taking the place of good, homecooked meals? When my son was in college a few years ago, one of his friends told
him she had never had a homecooked meal. I would have problems believing that, but I do know of a couple of women who never
cook at home and I'm sure that number is growing more and more.
With many families gone are the days when a
15¢ hamburger was a special treat you got when you went "downtown" and did some school shopping. In my case
it was Royal Castle: 15¢ hamburger...tiny, but so good with a 5¢ birch beer (better than root beer).
A few sorta interesting
fast food facts: - Dunkin' Donuts the original
"Starbucks" (overpriced coffee) The first Dunkin' Donuts opened in Quincy, Mass. The entrepreneur served top-quality,
whole-bean, Arabica coffee at 10¢ per cup while the competition charged a nickel for cheaper coffee.
- Nathan's Hot Dogs: Founded in 1916 on Coney Island, NY. Nathan's
begins serving Coca Cola. Today, Nathan's holds the distinction of being Coca Cola's longest chain
customer
- Denny's
began as Danny's Donuts in Lakewood, California.
Harold Butler, 32, told his investors of plans to serve the best coffee and donuts, offer the best service and value in the industry, and to stay open 24 hours a day. As
the company grew, the menu grew to include sandwiches and in 1959 became known as Denny's Restaurants

- Where was the first Chinese
buffet served & when? "Chinese" food first stalked American appetites around the time of the San Francisco Gold
Rush when, according to the Smithsonian Institution, the first recorded Chinese restaurant on U.S. territory opened in 1849.
It was called Macao and Woosung and was founded by Norman Asing, who developed what may have been the first all-you-can-eat
buffet, charging a buck for the splurge. His innovation spawned a flurry of "chow chows," and they blessed America
with an enduring legacy: chop suey."
